Club América and Deportivo Toluca F.C. are two of the most popular teams in Mexico. They have a long-standing rivalry that dates back to the early days of Mexican football.
The two teams first met in the 1920s, when Club América was founded. Since then, they have played each other numerous times in various competitions. The most notable of these is the Mexican Clausura, which is the top tier of Mexican football.
In recent years, Club América has had the upper hand in the rivalry, winning the last three meetings between the two sides. However, Deportivo Toluca F.C. will be looking to turn things around when they meet again in the near future.
Deportivo Toluca F.C.’s Formation and Early History
Formed in 1913, Deportivo Toluca F.C. is one of the oldest football clubs in Mexico. The club was founded by a group of students from the Escuela Nacional Preparatoria, which is part of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). The team’s first colors were black and white, and it wasn’t until later on that they adopted their now-famous red and white stripes.
Deportivo Toluca F.C.’s first official match was played against Club América in 1916, with Toluca winning 3-2. This early rivalry would go on to shape both clubs’ histories, as they became two of the most successful and popular teams in Mexican football. In the early years of the rivalry, both teams enjoyed success, with Club América winning the league in 1921 and 1922, and Deportivo Toluca taking home the title in 1923.
The first big victory for either side came in 1927 when Club América beat Deportivo Toluca 5-1 in a friendly match. This lopsided scoreline sparked a heated rivalry between the two clubs that continues to this day. In the following years, both teams would go on to win multiple league titles, solidifying their status as two of Mexican football’s powerhouses.
