Who Is Louise Jean McCary?

Louise Jean McCary was born on October 3, 1934, in Jacksonville, Florida. After graduating from high school, she attended Florida A&M College on a full scholarship, studying to become a teacher.

In 1962, McCary became the first African American woman to be hired by the U.S. State Department as a foreign service officer. She was assigned to the Caribbean region, and then transferred to the Consular Section in Tokyo, Japan, in 1965. There she met and married her husband, Robert McCary.
